Belgian ports may face significant operational disruptions in the coming days as a result of announced strikes. Several unions have planned actions in protest against the proposed pension reform measures by the Belgian government.

The actions are expected to affect port operations such as loading, discharging, terminal handling and towage services. As a result, there is a risk that vessels may experience delays in Belgian ports such as Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Ghent. Uncertainty regarding the scope and duration of the actions currently makes it difficult to obtain a complete picture of the potential impact. Ports in Zeeland already experienced disruption yesterday as a result of the strikes in Belgium. Vessels calling at Terneuzen and Vlissingen were unable to proceed into port because personnel at the traffic control and pilots on the Westerschelde were also on strike.
For members with vessels calling Belgian ports are advised to contact the local ship’s agent. Local agents can provide the most up-to-date information on the operational status of terminals, waiting times and any alternative options.
