On 28 February 2026, the United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes against military targets in Iran. Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes against targets across the region, including Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has also declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to maritime traffic. There have in the meantime been several reported strikes on merchant vessels in the region. This development represents a significant escalation of tensions in the region and creates a rapidly evolving and potentially hazardous operating environment for vessels.
In addition to the increased risk of vessels becoming direct targets, there are reports of GPS spoofing and jamming of GPS/GLONASS signals in the region, which may pose a serious navigational hazard.
