We have been informed by our Mexican correspondent, P&I Services Mexico, of an ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is currently affecting operations at the ports of Veracruz and, to a lesser extent, Coatzacoalcos.

Since early March 2026, the spill has extended over approximately 600 kilometres of coastline. While investigations by Mexican authorities are ongoing, the incident is suspected to involve a potential discharge from an unidentified vessel. Significant quantities of crude oil have now reached port areas, with active slicks still present.
Vessels calling at the affected ports should be aware of several operational risks. Floating oil may contaminate and impact vessel systems and coatings. If a vessel enters a port with contamination it may be subject to inspections and potentially exposed to fines, or detention. Additionally, cleaning and inspection requirements could lead to operational delays.
Members trading in the area are strongly advised to maintain vigilant monitoring when approaching affected waters, and to take preventive measures such as deploying containment booms when alongside. In cases of hull contamination, prompt action should be taken to arrange inspection, cleaning, and appropriate documentation in coordination with local correspondents.
