In recent months we have seen an increase in notifications involving refrigerated (reefer) containers. These cases concern malfunctioning units, incorrect temperature settings, power supply issues or stowage problems.

The consequences can be significant, as cargoes carried in reefers are usually high-value and perishable. For Members, such incidents may result in complex claims and disputes over responsibility.
When problems arise during a voyage, the Master’s response and the evidence collected on board play a crucial role in determining the outcome of a future claim. Accurate records of temperature readings, alarms and any visible irregularities are essential. Equally important is taking prompt action whenever an incident is reported so that surveys and mitigation measures can be arranged without delay. Cargoes such as meat or fish deteriorate quickly, and delaying action often limits recovery options. Authorities in ports may also intervene if spoiled or leaking cargo poses a health risk. In some cases, containers have been refused discharge or ordered to be returned to the port of origin, creating further complications.
From a preventive perspective, Members are advised to ensure that:
- The vessel receives clear written instructions regarding the required temperature, connection and ventilation before loading.
- Any visible damage to containers should be noted and loading refused if the damage makes the container unsuitable for carriage.
- The crew should confirm that all reefers are connected to a reliable power supply and that monitoring routines are established for the voyage.
These precautions reduce the likelihood of disputes and demonstrate that Owners have acted diligently.
NNPC can assist Members directly by appointing surveyors and correspondents on short notice, both at the port of discharge and enroute if necessary. Early involvement allows evidence to be secured, local requirements to be addressed and mitigation options to be explored before losses escalate.
