We draw members’ attention to a series of container fires involving UN 3378 Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate (sodium percarbonate). Several incidents have been reported since early October 2026. The cargo was correctly declared in each case. Further incidents cannot be ruled out.

Sodium percarbonate is a Class 5.1 oxidising substance that may self-heat under certain conditions. Decomposition releases heat and oxygen, which can intensify a fire and cause it to spread to adjacent cargo, including other dangerous goods. As the substance releases its own oxygen, smothering is generally ineffective and water is the preferred extinguishing medium. The IMDG Code permits stowage both on deck and under deck, meaning affected containers may be difficult to reach.
Members are advised to exercise particular caution when accepting this cargo for carriage. Before loading, we recommend reviewing the Safety Data Sheet, stowage and segregation arrangements, and onboard emergency response measures. Where the cargo is already on board, the Master and crew should be informed of the containers’ locations. These containers should be included in regular fire rounds, and the crew should be prepared to respond to an incident.
