Based on the circular from our correspondent Eltvedt & O’Sullivan and their TCI network we wish to update our members on developments regarding the Ebola outbreak in West and Central Africa.

The outbreak remains geographically limited to the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo whilst a small number of suspected cases have been reported in northern Angola. Across the region, the situation is stable:
- No reported cases and no operational restrictions in Benin, Cameroon, Republic of Congo (Pointe-Noire), Ivory Coast, Ghana, Gambia, Kenya/Tanzania, Liberia, Madagascar, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (Matadi/Boma/Banana/Ango Ango): The outbreak has not reached the western port areas; local authorities have issued no specific advisories affecting shipping.
- Guinea: Although no cases have been reported, authorities have proactively strengthened preventive measures, including enhanced epidemiological surveillance, increased health screening at ports, airports and land borders, and improved laboratory readiness.
All ports in the affected region continue to operate normally. There are no additional screening requirements, health declarations, inspections, delays or limitations on vessel calls, cargo handling or crew changes. Standard ISPS and hygiene protocols remain in force.
We recommend that Masters:
- Ensure all crew members are familiar with Ebola symptoms and maintain strict shipboard health, sanitation and ISPS procedures.
- Strictly control access to the vessel and prevent unauthorised boarding or stowaways.
- Monitor crew health throughout the voyage.
- In the event of any suspected symptoms, seek immediate medical advice and notify the next port of call without delay.
Based on the latest information from TCI Africa, the Ebola outbreak has not caused any disruption to shipping activities in West and Central Africa. Vessels can continue to trade to the region in the ordinary course of business. NNPC-Marine will continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates should the position change.
